Sanctuary Wood

A Chapel service was held on 9th November, Remembrance Sunday, at which the President of the OWA laid a wreath on behalf of the Old Wellingtonians. This was followed by the unveiling of a plaque to mark Sanctuary Wood. Following an inspiring visit to Ypres by a number of former pupils, along with the Corps of Drums, the Old Wellingtonian Society decided that they would like to reinstate Sanctuary Wood. The wood, which stands on the corner of the school field behind the Chapel was named by the then Headmaster of Wellington School, George Corner, after the First World War, in memory of his nephew who had been killed in Sanctuary Wood in Ypres during the War. Over the years the number of trees has been reduced and the name and significance lost to new generations of students. Last November there was a ceremonial planting of a tree to start the process off.After a roast dinner members of the OWA joined the CCF and Corps of Drums and paraded through the town to lay a wreath on the War Memorial in the park.
